they ask: who are you
to claim knowledge
of the meaning of life?
who are you
to guess answers
when questions suffice?
didactic! they say
dogmatic and worse
moralistic, sermonizing
demagogue, you curse
your presence serves as
a reminder unpleasant
you threaten their traditions
you empower their peasants
your answers are as simple
as sharp is Occam's razor
in harmony with what we know
self-evident, in our nature
you threaten their power
when you dare to voice the why
even today
messages are despised
silence is art
and not knowing is wise
in the embrace of uncertainty
people reject purpose

When you saw that the bus was full, except for one empty seat beside the hijabi, when you hesitated and even took a few steps back before sitting down, what was going through your mind? Would you have gotten off the bus and boarded the next one, if there had been time? Would you have sooner stood for the entire hour than sat by me, except that you didn’t want to draw any more attention to yourself? Don’t you realize that your hat is already a glowing alarm, a red beacon of distrust?
Do you see my own headgear the same way?

you are every du'a before futoor
every end of my taraweeh nights
my words between sips of zamzam
my jihad is to respark your light
I have not yet hiked Arafat
but I pray to Allah I will
and that when I finally do
you won't be floating still
instead may you be by my side
may we together make the climb
and be not ships but lighthouses
that guide through place and time

Gregory Rabassa opens his essay “No Two Snowflakes Are Alike: Translation as Metaphor” with an intriguing discussion of how one concept can approach another, but never fully equal it. However, it doesn’t take two pages for his examples to insult me to my very core. In explaining how different words hold different meanings in each culture, he writes, “Among some peoples, Muslims, for example, the dog is considered a vile creature, worthy of a swift kick, while others, notably those of northern Europe, dote on him.” Wow. To quell my offense, allow me to correct Rabas

foggy and routine
this life has us bitter
we might know what it means
but our wisdom can wither
it can falter and dim
in the course of the days
we might know of Him
but forget of His ways
till we can see nothing
but the clouds of this Earth
we know there lies something
beyond them of worth
but for too long we breathe
the nebulous vapor
and the taste of fresh air
from our memory tapers
till the mind becomes gray
so burdened a sponge
soaking up acid rain
we have yet to expunge
but then Ramadan
wafts in like a breeze
so ends the stupor
we fall to our knees
we remember to thank Him
and ask of Him

In English, it sounds like an intimidating biochemical process: ablution. In Arabic, it’s a common and approachable word, made of likable letters: wudhu. It is a process, but a rather simple one. You cup your hands to gather water and then raise it to your mouth. Rinse your mouth three times, then gather more water to wash your face three times. Then bunch up your sleeves to wet your arms up to the elbows three times. Wipe the top of your head, clean your ears with your pointer fingers and thumbs, and finally, soak your feet up to the ankles. Hygiene is a big part of Islam, but

Tell Facebook to take down pro-ISIS content!
Please sign and share this petition! I found several thousand pro-ISIS Facebook users and reported a bunch of them, and Facebook doesn't recognize them as violating its Community Standards. How can we fight the spread of terrorism if it's considered permissible to publicly support it?

Let me tell you a story...
Above is a short video about what the Syrian refugees are fleeing. Please, watch it. It will only take 5 minutes.
I wish I could embed it, but since the embed link has a # in it, deviantART keeps making it a tag instead.
